Physical Education

'I think sportsmanship is knowing that it is a game, that we are only as good as our opponents, and whether you win or lose, to always give 100 percent.'

Sue Wicks (WNBA)

Intent: Why we teach your child Physical Education and what we teach.

At Elburton Primary School, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles. It is our curriculum intent that all pupils are provided with access to high quality PE and sport provision that inspires children through enjoyable, challenging and inclusive lessons. We want our children to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop life skills as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport.

Implementation: What our Physical Education curriculum looks like and how we teach it.

Elburton’s PE curriculum is a coherently planned and ambitious curriculum that is taught by all teachers across the school, starting from Pre School. We use the contents from Development Matters, Cambridgeshire for Learning, National Curriculum as well as LTA tennis and Chance to Shine Cricket.

Our curriculum progression map has been carefully planned by specialist PE coaches from the Plymouth Sports Partnership (PSSP) to ensure that children develop key skills, which are closely assessed throughout lessons. The progression map ensures teachers understand children’s prior learning and what they need to learn next (building on their prior knowledge). This curriculum ensures teachers create a positive environment that will enable all pupils to focus on their learning and the skills they need to be physically and mentally healthy throughout their lives.

We provide high quality PE lessons twice a week covering; gym, dance, fundamental skills, net and wall, invasion games, athletics and striking and fielding, swimming, Outdoor Adventurous Activities (Y2-Y6) and Wild Tribe (EYFS).

Impact: How do children show that they know more and remember more?

The high-quality teaching of PE creates pupils with a positive attitude towards physical activity for life. Our carefully planned and sequenced curriculum ensures children at Elburton are physically educated so that they develop in-depth knowledge of the relevant skills across PE, and therefore succeed.

Assessing the progress of fundamental movements skills in a range of physical activities within lessons and at the end of each unit enables teachers to see where they can help children to progress, through scaffolding (using the STEP framework) and providing further challenge to those who need it. This ensures that children know more, understand more and can do more. Children at Elburton leave with the confidence to continue their physical education beyond primary and secondary school.

With our own outdoor swimming pool, every child receives swimming provision each year in the summer term. Therefore, the majority of our children leave school able to swim at least 25 metres without aids. Our extra-curricular uptake is high, inclusive of disadvantaged groups.  In addition to this, many children have benefitted from the opportunities to represent the school in a range of sporting competitions and events.

How you can help your child at home:
EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

  • Talk to your child about the different food groups and the benefits of these.
  • Encourage your child to eat a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Watch Joe Wicks, The Body Coach, tutorials on YouTube.
  • Visit the Oak Academy Physical Education lessons.
  • Engage in a least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. This can be taking the stairs instead of the lift and walking short journeys instead of using the car.
  • Visit the local parks in your area: Sherford, Saltram, King George V Playing Fields (and the sandy park).
  • Visit your local leisure centre and swimming pool.
  • Take a walk, scoot or cycle along the River Thames.
